WENDY MARGARET GOMES

(August 14, 1940-December 1, 2024)

Wendy Gomes passed away on December 1, 2024, at the Marotta Family Hospital (formerly Niagara Health St. Catharines) in St. Catharines after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time she passed. Born on August 14, 1940 to George and Margaret Clarke of Strathclyde, Barbados, she grew up in Barbados and attended St. Winifred's School where she was Head Girl. She met and married her husband, Julio Aubrey Gomes and during their 47 years of marriage they lived in London, England, Montreal, Toronto, Richmond, BC, Salisbury, England, and Aurora but to her, Barbados was always home. Wendy was a caring, affectionate and much-loved mother to two sons Andrew (Brenda) and Brad (Eva). Her two grandsons Niklas and Marcus were the apple of her eye. She will be dearly missed by them as well as by her sister Patricia Harney of Barbados and dear sisters-in-law Shirley and Monique, countless close friends as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents George and Margaret Clarke of Barbados as well as her husband Julio Aubrey. She was generous with her time and always ready to lend an ear if you needed advice or someone to talk to. She was famous for giving instructions to us all (needed or not) and her wisdom will be missed. After her husband Aubrey died in 2013, she moved back to Canada to be with her sons and to help raise her grandsons. Despite being from Barbados and not fond of the cold, she attended as many of their ice hockey games as possible and took delight in their successes on and off the ice. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate her life on Wednesday December 11th at noon at the St. John's Church at 12 Carleton Street South in Thorold, Ontario. On a later date she will be interred with her husband at the Westbury Cemetery in Barbados. The family would love to thank the incredible staff at the Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines for their care during the last two weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
