THORSTEINSON, WAYNE WILLIAM O.N. – Passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Westhills Care Centre, at the age of 81. Loving husband of Pat for 50 years. Devoted Dad to Janice (Darryl) Sargeant, Cathy Cook (Robb Norris), and Christy Graham (Chad Turner and his daughter Ella). Proud Papa to Grace, Will, Bishop, Max, Eli, Charlie, and Theo. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Gus and Gwen; his brothers, Ray and Arnold; and many cherished aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be fondly remembered by his nephews, cousins, friends, and all who knew him.
Above all, Wayne valued his family and friends. He was kind and welcoming, and his infectious laugh could fill a room. Having lost his mother at a young age, he was cared for by his extended family, to whom he remained devoted throughout his life. Wayne’s heart and home were always open. In addition to his dedication to family, Wayne was also committed to his community. He was a Mason with the Beaver Lodge AF & FM No. 83 GRC in Strathroy, Ontario, a member of the St. Catharines and District Shrine Club, the Eastern Star Mountain Chapter, and the Canadian Corps Unit 44,and a community baseball coach. Raised at St. John’s Anglican Church in Thorold, Wayne’s loyalty to the church never wavered. He co-chaired the rebuilding committee following the devastating fire in 2004, giving everything he had to restore and improve the facilities. His laughter is in the mortar, his spirit in the stones, and his sweat in the shine of the floors. Wayne served the parish in many roles: Warden, greeter, server, breakfast outreach volunteer, and member of the clean-up crew. He was honored with the Order of Niagara for his years of outstanding service to the church and community.
Wayne loved his wife deeply, and together they built a home surrounded by beautiful gardens and his pool. They enjoyed years of competitive card games, cheering on the Blue Jays, trips to the cottage, traveling, making lifelong friendships along the way. Wayne was a man ahead of his time, teaching his three daughters that good men cook, clean, and do laundry. He dedicated himself to his girls and later, with pride, cheered on his grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life for Wayne will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at St. John’s Anglican Church, 12 Carlton Street, Thorold. The service will begin at 3:00 PM, followed by visitation in the church hall. The family will offer a special tribute at 4:30 PM and warmly invites you to attend either or both parts of the gathering.
