Listen to Obituary

Field, Peter Owen May 4, 1939 – August 6, 2023.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Peter, on August 6, 2023 at Westhills Care Centre. Predeceased by his parents Henry (Jimmie) and Grace (Eleanor), brother Mike (Linda) and sister Joanne (Fred), he leaves behind his wife and best friend of 49 years Diane, sons Jeffrey (Jayne), Allan (Mary-Anne) and Peter, grandsons Luke and Eric, and many loved brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Peter was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, where he attended elementary and secondary schools before becoming an electrical apprentice and eventually starting a family of his own. It was also there that he bought his first and favourite car, an Austin Healey convertible.

Peter had a strong work ethic which found many outlets during his long career as an electrical contractor and estimator, and almost a decade of farm life. He was also an avid sportsman. Whether it was playing squash or tennis, cycling or running, card games with friends, kayaking with the alligators, or cheering his racehorses on to victory, he was always up for a new adventure.

Peter was a longtime member of the Masons and spent several years as a steward in his local United Church, where he was also a member of the choir, singing many solos at church services and weddings.

He loved his home away from home in North Port, Florida, where he forged many lifelong friendships, and was renowned for his famous theme parties. The times spent at La Casa were some of his happiest, and that’s how he earned the nickname “Florida Grandpa” among close family.

Peter will be remembered for his sense of humour and wit, but most of all for the great generosity he showed to family and friends. He was always looking out for the wellbeing of those he loved.

We are eternally grateful to Dr. Tatzel and all the other doctors, nurses, PSWs and health workers for the compassionate care Peter received over the past few years. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, please honour Peter’s memory by performing a simple act of kindness or generosity towards another person.

When I come to the end of the road

And the sun has set for me

I want no rites in a gloom filled room

Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little – but not for long

And not with your head bowed low.

Remember the love that once we shared

Miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take

And each must go along.

It’s all a part of the Master’s plan,

A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick at heart

Go to the friends we know.

And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds

Miss me, but let me go.
