She attended Darby Elementary School in Port Robinson and Eastdale Secondary School in Welland. After graduating she started working on a number of waitressing jobs until she began her career with the Ontario Jockey Club in 1973 working her way up from waitress to Dining Room Supervisor and retiring in 2006. She enjoyed gardening so much she decided to work part time at Terra Gardens in Burlington until she became too ill to continue. On behalf of Joan and myself I would like to extend sincere thanks to all of her friends who helped her during this most difficult time. A special thanks to Sandy and Linda, her lifelong school friends, the time you spent with Joan meant the world to her and to Liz, a true and loving friend who helped care for Joan at a time when Joan needed a loving friend and a last thank you to Donna, Janet and Cindy. I would also like to extend a very special and sincere thanks to Crystal Campbell, Joan's nurse who did everything and more in helping Joan during her last few months at home.
