Lee, George ~ Legendary St. Paul Window Washer dies at age 88. Surrounded by his Cobblestone Gardens family, Mr. George Percy Lee died Tuesday afternoon, July 27, 2010. Born January 28, 1922, George began his iconic career at the age of 18. Loved by all who knew him, George was a fixture on St. Paul St., easily recognizable by his long snow white hair, his red Scottish tam and his Speedo. He was loved by merchants and customers alike and always had a smile and a hello for all he met. He continued his famous career for 44 years until a tragic accident on September 24, 1984 happened and changed his life forever. George was hit by a bike while crossing St. Paul St. and sustained a life threatening head injury. Unable to return home or to work, George went to live at Chestnut Court Retirement Home in Thorold and there he has lived for the last 25 years. Predeceased by his parents and siblings, George adopted the staff of Chestnut Court (now known as Cobblestone Gardens) as his family. Throughout his retirement, he maintained his love of his Scottish heritage, his prized tam and dancing girls.
