FORTUNE, GEORGE RAYMOND – (Retired welder from Port Weller Dry Docks after many years of dedicated service) Peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, George Raymond Fortune passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Niagara Health – Greater Niagara General Hospital, shortly after celebrating his 89th birthday. George was blessed to visit with every member of his family, including those who joined him by FaceTime from afar in the days leading up to his death.
Beloved husband, best friend, and soulmate of Marlene for 23 years, and predeceased by his first wife, Laura. Loving father, affectionately known as “Da,” to Richard, Terrance, Hugh (Linda), Shannon (Anthony Bucci), George (Joan), Frances, Mary Beth and James, and predeceased by his son, Joseph, Mary Beth’s twin. Cherished stepfather of Sue (Nick) D’Orazio, Cheryl (Don) Dillon, and Jeff (Heather) Ruller.
A devoted family man, George was a proud grandfather of fifteen grandchildren and helped raise his granddaughter Chantal, with whom he shared a special bond. He also treasured his relationship with his great-granddaughter Sierra.
Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, George was the last surviving member of a family of nine children, predeceased parents, his seven brothers and two sisters. He began his working life in the coal mines of Cape Breton before moving to Ontario, where he learned the welding trade and enjoyed a long career with Port Weller Dry Docks.
George could fix almost anything and was a jack of all trades. He loved cooking for family and friends, and never lost his deep love for the ocean. A man of strong faith, he was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, serving as a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and a leader and participant of various prayer groups.
Visitors will be received at Bocchinfuso Funeral Home, 2 Regent Street, Thorold, on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Vigil Prayers will be held at 5:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church, 21 Queen Street South, Thorold, on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. Rite of Committal Lakeview Cemetery.
