Eugenia Gatner

GATNER, EUGENIA - "Super Babcia" passed away peacefully on September 2, 2023 at the age of 88, after a short battle with cancer. She took her last breath resting in the warmth of the sun, quietly listening to her favourite Polish songs while surrounded by her loved ones.

Eugenia was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Henryk. She leaves behind her four beloved children, Lidia Tymczak, Henryk Gatner (Jolanta), Krzysztof Gatner (Elzbieta), and Anna Gatner (Guy), and her grandchildren Isabella Burt, Agnes Roscoe (Tim), Tomek Gatner (Ania), Kasia Gatner, Paulina Gatner, Steve Gatner (Maike), Peter Tluczkiewicz, and Monika Tluczkiewicz. She is also survived by her treasured great-grandchildren AJ, Ella and Cole, and a host of family and friends.

Born in Poland in 1934, Eugenia developed an early passion for cooking, which led her to a career as the head chef in an elementary school. In her spare time, she loved to knit and crochet, as well as tend to her beautiful garden. In 2004, Eugenia moved to Canada to live with her daughter Lidia and her family in St. Catharines. Eugenia cherished living in Canada, and proudly became a Canadian citizen in 2017.

Affectionately known as "Super Babcia" to many, Eugenia earned this nickname for her courage, strength, warmth, humour and endless positivity. Brave, for moving to Canada at the age of 70 speaking only a few words of English. Talented, as recognized by anyone who was lucky enough to enjoy her culinary skills. Joyful, in every encounter, no matter the circumstance. And loving, to her family, to her friends, and to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Relatives and friends will be received at Bocchinfuso Funeral Home on Thursday, September 28, 2023 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, followed immediately by Funeral Liturgy Outside of Mass, celebrated in the funeral home Chapel. Rite of Committal Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Donations in memory of Eugenia may be made to HOSPICE NIAGARA in lieu of flowers.

Eugenia touched the lives of many, and was indeed "super". It broke our hearts to lose her, but she didn't go alone, for part of us went with her, the day that God called her home. She will be greatly missed, and never forgotten.
