DI LALLO DOMINIC - Born in Italy, Dominic’s life started in the small town of Petrella Tifernina in the Province of Campobasso, in the Region of Molise. In 1954, Dominic and his parents, Iolanda and Nicola, boarded the ship Conte Biancamano to embark on a long journey to Canada in hopes of finding opportunity and a better life.
Dominic took advantage of educational opportunities after graduating from Merritton High School in 1968. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from York University in 1971 followed by a professional Bachelor of Education degree from Brock University in 1973. In 1982, Dominic’s impressive educational achievement culminated in a Master of Arts degree from Niagara University, New York, U.S.A. On June 30, 1981, Dominic submitted his dissertation entitled The Academic Effects of Teaching French to Immersion Students as Compared to Native French Speaking Students Taught in their Mother Language.
Dominic continued his love of education by becoming a schoolteacher, a profession to which he was proud to belong for 30 years. He started teaching for the Haldimand-Norfolk Roman Catholic Separate School Board at St. Michael’s School, Dunnville in 1974. In 1980, he began teaching French for the School Board. Fluent in French, English and Italian, language was Dominic’s passion. French as a Second Language (FSL) was his passion project, and he would never miss an opportunity to contribute to a discussion or review a published article on the topic.
From 1985 to 1987, Dominic was the interim French teacher for all of the Haldimand schools. During his teaching career with the Brant Haldimand-Norfolk Catholic District School Board, he also taught at St. Stephen’s, Cayuga, St. Mary’s, Hagersville, and St. Patrick’s, Caledonia.
Dominic’s love of teaching never ended, even after retirement. He used his free time to teach little lessons to his grandchildren, Roman, Olivia, and Simon, who affectionately referred to him as Baba. Nothing made him happier in life than the joy and innocence of young children. After 43 years of marriage, he will be dearly missed by his wife, Anne, as well as his sons Dominic, Robert (Alysssa) and Sean (Shelby), whom he was extremely proud of. Dominic instilled in his family a sense of loyalty, duty, and love, and his family will continue to live in accordance with his life lessons.
