Having spent his entire life in Niagara, David retired from General Motors in 1990 from his position as Tool Room Supervisor. He also volunteered his time with both Grantham and Merritton Volunteer Firefighters. His retirement passions included researching local history, especially the development of the Welland Canal. David was extremely proud of his father Private Alfred Stephen Swan who fought for the Canadians at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, this inspired the extensive World War One research that he has shared with a local military museum.
